If you service modern semi-trucks or trailers, the answer is short: 33mm. The overwhelming majority of hub-piloted wheel systems on the road today use 33mm two-piece flange nuts, front and rear. Older stud-piloted (Budd-style) wheels are the exception — those typically take a 1-1/2" socket and use inner/outer nut sets — so check what is actually on the hub before you buy. But for anything built in recent decades, 33mm is the working standard.
Why a deep socket, specifically
On a hub-piloted wheel the stud often protrudes well past the nut face. A standard-depth socket bottoms out on the stud before the flats fully seat — then it cams off under hammering, rounding the nut and chewing the socket. A deep socket like the SK083-33M (90mm overall) swallows the stud stick-out and puts full flat engagement on the nut, which is exactly where you want the force going at 450+ ft-lbs.
6-point, not 12
Under an impact gun, a 12-point socket concentrates load on the corners of the nut — the first thing to round on a corroded fastener. A 6-point socket drives on the flats. On wheel nuts that see road salt and 500 ft-lbs install torque, 6-point is not a preference; it is the difference between breaking the nut loose and re-cutting it off.
CR-MO, because impact sockets are not hand sockets
Chrome-plated hand sockets (chrome vanadium) are hard and brittle — under impact loading they crack, and a cracked socket at 2,000+ ft-lbs is shrapnel. Impact-rated sockets are made from chrome-molybdenum (CR-MO) alloy that flexes with each hammer blow instead of shattering. The rule every shop teaches on day one: never run a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench. If it is going on the gun, it is CR-MO.
1" drive or 3/4" drive?
Semi wheel nuts install around 450–500 ft-lbs and can take double that to break loose after a season of weather. A 1" drive gun delivers that with headroom — the AW-280GL (2,200 ft-lbs) with its 8" extended anvil reaches the inner wheel of a dual assembly without wrestling extensions. A strong 3/4" like the AW-222P (2,400 ft-lbs) handles wheel-end work too at lower tool weight — but skip the 3/4"-to-1" adapter stack where you can: every adapter joint bleeds impact energy and adds a failure point.
Torque it back right
Breaking nuts loose is half the job. Install torque on commercial wheel ends matters enough that getting it wrong shows up as loose-wheel incidents: snug in a star pattern, torque to the wheel or axle manufacturer's spec (commonly in the 450–500 ft-lbs range for 33mm flange nuts — verify against the spec for your fleet), and follow your re-torque procedure; many fleets re-check after the first 50–100 miles of service.
